The Red River Gorge Climber’s Coalition, or RRGCC, is a group of climber volunteers that sets to preserve the rock climbing opportunities in and around the Red River Gorge. These two locations offer a variety of climbs for all skill levels, so it’s a great opportunity to try out some techniques while challenging yourself with different climbing styles. If you’re new to the area, try hitting up Pebble Beach and Sky Bridge Ridge. Sport climbing presents an entirely different challenge, and the area is one of the best places to experience it. Sport climbing took off in a big way when Porter Jarrard began bolting overhanging walls that had not been previously deemed climbable due to their difficulty, and other developers soon followed suit. It started becoming popular with rock climbers in the 1950s and early 1960s, and it became well known throughout the country during the 1970s with some of the earliest documented routes.Ĭlimbing bloomed in the following decades, with a revolutionary change taking place in the 1990s. The Red River Gorge is called Red because of the red color of many of its sandstone cliffs. The area also offers great hiking trails, camping spots and other outdoor activities to enjoy during your (weekend) trip. Cheaper flights might be had from Cincinnati or Louisville, each about two hours of driving away. If you’re traveling by plane, the best airport to fly to is Lexington, after which you can drive to the Red area.
The area can be reached by car in about an hour driving from Lexington, Kentucky. The Red River runs through the area for about 20 miles. Located within the Daniel Boone National Forest, the greater Red River Gorge area is spread over 26,000 acres. Either bring your own gear or hire one of the trusted local guides to offer advice and training. There are plenty of climbs here for every style of climber, including sport, trad, and bouldering.
